Why God?

One night, a man met God in a dream.

God showed the man the wonders of creation. He showed him the majesty of the mountain ranges, the fury of an ocean storm, the stillness of a sunset on a beach.

They drew closer and saw the pinnacle of creation, a mother holding her newborn child. The man saw the love and tenderness in God’s eye and nodded for he understood what God was feeling.

The man looked again at creation and noticed some darkness. He saw a child without enough to eat. He saw a young girl, 13 years old, who lost her mother and now did not know where she would go. He saw young men and women who had given up hope and turned to violence and to drugs. He saw a grown woman trembling and hiding in fear, remembering how she was hurt and abused as a child. He saw all of the hurting people and was heart-broken.

He looked again and saw a tear in his Lord’s eye but this time did not understand.

“God,” he started, “You have the power to create the heavens and the earth. You have the power to still the storm and form all with but a whisper. All of your creation is fearfully and wonderfully made.”

He was troubled and a bit angry at these thoughts. He continued, “I see the love and the hurt in your eyes. How can you let this go on? Why do you allow all of this pain and suffering? Why don’t you do something?”

God shook his head and quietly whispered, “I was just going to ask you the same question.”
