From Financial Anxiety to Financial Clarity
Many years ago, I was afraid of automatic bill payments.
Every time I considered setting up an automatic debit, the same concerns surfaced:
- What if an unexpected expense appears?
- What if I forget something?
- What if my account goes negative?
- What if a mistake cascades into other problems?
For years, the fear outweighed the convenience.
Then several years ago, when purchasing a vehicle, I was offered a lower interest rate if I enrolled in automatic payments. I agreed, but I also knew I needed a better system.
I opened a separate checking account dedicated solely to paying bills.
I set up direct deposits to ensure funds were available.
I stopped carrying the debit card for that account.
I built safeguards.
What started as a simple change became the beginning of a larger journey.
A Spreadsheet That Changed My Relationship with Money
In June 2023, I created a spreadsheet to track my finances.
Nothing fancy.
Just a check register.
- Income
- Expenses
- Upcoming bills
- Running balances
As the months passed, the spreadsheet evolved.
Scheduled transactions were entered in advance.
Expected expenses were forecasted.
Balances were projected.
Reconciliation became routine.
Over time, I began adding more automatic payments:
- Rent
- Vehicle payment
- Electric bill
- Internet service
- Mobile phone service
- Charitable giving
As my confidence grew, so did my peace of mind.
Since June 14, 2023, the system has tracked more than 1,700 financial transactions.
What began as a spreadsheet became something much more important:
A system that helped remove uncertainty.
The Problem With Existing Financial Software
While there are many excellent financial applications available today, I found that most were trying to solve problems I didn’t have.
Many offered:
- Investment management
- Complex debt analysis
- Credit score tracking
- Wealth management tools
- Features I would never use
What I wanted was much simpler.
I wanted to know:
- What bills are coming up?
- How much money will I have available?
- Am I spending according to my priorities?
- Can I make this purchase without impacting future obligations?
I wanted clarity.
Not complexity.
Why SpendRight Exists
SpendRight was born from a simple idea:
Personal finance should be understandable.
Rather than overwhelming users with countless features and dashboards, SpendRight focuses on the information most people need every day:
- Tracking expenditures
- Managing upcoming expenses
- Projecting account balances
- Identifying spending patterns
- Reporting by category
- Supporting intentional financial decisions
Including stewardship-focused categories such as charitable giving.
The goal is not to create another financial platform.
The goal is to create a practical tool that helps people feel confident about where they stand financially.
More Than a Budgeting Application
At its core, SpendRight is not really about money.
It is about peace of mind.
Financial uncertainty impacts families every day.
Stress over bills, unexpected expenses, and cash flow can consume enormous amounts of mental and emotional energy.
My hope is that SpendRight helps people replace uncertainty with confidence and fear with clarity.
When we understand our finances, we are better positioned to focus on the things that matter most:
- Family
- Relationships
- Serving others
- Personal growth
- Living intentionally
Technology should help people live better lives.
That is the purpose behind SpendRight.
A Personal Commitment
Ray of SonShine Technical Services was not created because I needed additional income.
God has already provided abundantly for my needs.
Instead, this company exists because I believe we are called to faithfully use the talents, experiences, and opportunities entrusted to us.
For that reason, profits from SpendRight will be donated to the Recovery Church Movement.
The Recovery Church Movement has played a significant role in my recovery journey, spiritual growth, and ministry development. They stood beside me through difficult seasons, invested in me as a leader, supported my biblical education, and helped shape the person I am today.
They believed in me when I helped plant new recovery churches. They provided mentorship as I pursued Bible college to deepen my understanding of Scripture and prepare myself to serve more faithfully. Their investment in my life has produced fruit for which I will always be grateful.
This is one small way of giving back to an organization that has given so much to me.
Stewardship in Practice
One of the guiding principles behind SpendRight is stewardship.
Not merely stewardship of money, but stewardship of time, opportunities, talents, and resources.
Years ago, I developed a reporting solution for a company whose CFO spent every Sunday manually compiling sales reports for executives. The resulting automation reduced an all-day process to a matter of minutes.
What mattered most was not the technology.
What mattered was that a husband and father no longer had to spend every Sunday working.
He got that time back for his family.
That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career.
The best technology solutions are not measured solely by efficiency gains or impressive features.
They are measured by how they improve people’s lives.
In many ways, SpendRight follows that same philosophy.
The goal is not simply to track dollars and cents.
The goal is to reduce uncertainty, increase confidence, and help people focus more on what truly matters.
Looking Forward
SpendRight is the first application developed under Ray of SonShine Technical Services, but it represents something larger than software.
It represents a belief that technology can be used thoughtfully, simply, and intentionally to help people live better lives.
My hope is that SpendRight helps individuals and families gain confidence in their financial decisions, steward their resources wisely, and focus more on what truly matters.
As we prepare for launch, I look forward to sharing more about the application, its capabilities, and the journey ahead.
